Born on May 2, 1936, as Arnold George Dorsey, Engelbert Humperdinck is one of the most successful singers.

His recordings of "Release Me" helped him achieve global success in 1967. He has since released more albums and continues to tour around the world.

The Rise to Fame of Engelbert Humperdinck

Engelbert Humperdinck is one of the most successful British singers of all time.

His career began in the 1960s, and he has since recorded a wide range of music, including ballads, pop songs, and gospel music.

He achieved international prominence in 1967 with the release of his recording of "Release Me."

Starting out as a performer under the name of Gerry Dorsey, he would eventually partner with manager Gordon Mills and achieve success after releasing recordings of the ballads "Release Me" and "The Last Waltz."

His recordings of these songs topped the UK Singles Chart, and they all sold more than a million copies each.

In the mid-'60s, Humperdinck was in Spain, visiting German songwriter Bert Kaempfert. Kaempfert offered arrangements of three songs for Humperdinck to sing: "Spanish Eyes," "Strangers in the Night," and "Wonderland by Night."

He returned to Britain, where he recorded all three songs. Before releasing them as a single, he recognized the potential of "Strangers in the Night" and asked manager Gordon Mills whether it could be released as a single.

Mills refused since Sinatra had also requested it first. Humperdinck released two other tracks off that album - "Spanish Eyes" and "Wonderland by Night."

In 1967, all the changes paid off when Engelbert released "Release Me."

It was a major hit in the United Kingdom and the United States. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 100 and topped the charts in the United Kingdom.

The single held back a Beatles song from reaching No. 1 in Britain for four consecutive weeks. The B-side to this record was "Ten Guitars."

Although Humperdinck had a few minor hits during this time, "Release Me" remains his best-known song.

Humperdinck's success continued into the 1970s with significant North American chart successes with "After the Lovin'" and "This Moment in Time."

In the 1990s, he received renewed attention with the release of "Lesbian Seagull" for the soundtrack of Beavis and Butt-head Do America.

He currently continues to record and tour, having sold over 140 million records worldwide. Engelbert Humperdinck was appointed Member of the Order of the
