Before Leonardo DiCaprio’s Breakthrough

Leonardo DiCaprio has been in his fair share of acting opportunities, but that wasn't always the case. Earlier in his career, he had trouble finding an agent, and when he got one, this agent suggested changing his name to Lenny Williams. However, he declined this and spent a year and a half searching for work and went through almost 1100 auditions. After a year and a half without any success, he decided to give up on his acting career. He was motivated by his father, who knew how badly DiCaprio's mother needed the income and urged him to continue trying. So he did, and after some time, he landed roles in about 20 commercials.

Because of his works and roles in The Outsiders, Santa Barbara, and Parenthood, he earned two nominations as Best Young Actor at the 12th Youth in Film Awards for Santa Barbara and his Best Young Actor for Parenthood.

The Rise to Fame of Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio started his career appearing in television commercials in the late 1980s. He is best known for his performance as a developmentally disabled boy in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, where he received his first nominations for Academy Awards and Golden Glove Award. He starred in Romeo + Juliet in 1996 and Titanic in 1997. Thanks to his success with these two films, he was able to gain international fame. After 1997, DiCaprio took a break from acting. He had more success in different genres, including crime drama in Catch Me If You Can and gangster films like Gangs of New York.

One movie that made him receive the Academy Awards and a BAFTA Award is the survival drama The Revenant, for which he won Best Actor.

Some of his famous and successful movies are:

  • The Aviator
  • Blood Diamond
  • The Departed
  • Revolutionary Road
  • Inception
  • Django Unchained
  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, was one of Leonardo DiCaprio's best films. The film grossed $147 million worldwide, and Leonardo earned his Silver Bear for Best Actor. After a year, the worldwide recognition of the Titanic is another breakthrough for Leonardo. At first, Leonardo had doubts about the film but eventually was encouraged by Cameron. This film was the most expensive at the time, with a budget of more than $200 million. Then, the movie became the highest-grossing film earning $2.1 billion worldwide.

His role as Jack Dawson made Leonardo a superstar, and of course, many girls fell in love with him that he became known as "Leo-mania." Titanic won 11 Academy Awards, but most of these were for the film. Leonardo did not gain any nomination, which led to a protest against AMPAS by more than 200 fans. He was nominated for Best Actor for Golden Globe Award and other high-profile awards.
