He is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He is also the ninth in the line of succession to the British throne.
As his older siblings had done, Andrew was looked after by a governess; she was responsible for helping him with his early education.
Andrew went to school at Gordonstoun in northern Scotland, where he was known as "the Sniggerer" because of his love of off-color jokes, which made him laugh almost every time he told them.

Some of the most notable include working with the UN and on global issues. He is also a patron of many charities and has previously worked with children's charities.
He began his military training in the Royal Navy and eventually transferred to the Royal Air Force, where he served as a flight pilot and commander of the Lynx helicopter.

Prince Andrew remained Vice Admiral.
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson
Prince Andrew is the Duke of York and the husband of Sarah Ferguson.
But before meeting Sarah, Prince Andrew was in the love headlines when he dated Koo Stark.
Andrew met Koo in February 1981, and they began a romantic relationship.
In October 1982, the two took a holiday together on the island of Mustique, and the media began to speculate about their relationship.
Paparazzi would love to follow a prince to know about his relationship, right?
However, in 1983, the couple split up, and the palace and the press became relentless in their pursuit of information.
Good thing the two remained good friends, and Andrew became the godfather to Stark's daughter. The two of them continued to maintain a professional and family relationship.
Finally, Andrew began dating his childhood friend, Sarah.
The two of them often met for polo matches and re-acquainted at Royal Ascot in 1985.
On July 23, 1986, the couple tied the knot at Westminster Abbey, and the Queen granted Andrew Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh.
The marriage between the Duke and Duchess of York looked like it was going to be successful, as they presented a united front to the public with two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie.
However, things began to get complicated for the couple during the late eighties when his frequency and length of travel increased due to his military career.
Prince Andrew and Sarah were a powerful couple in their time, but the Duke's military career meant that they often traveled separately.
The constant media attention and rumors about them made the Duchess of York feel vulnerable.
After years of marriage, the couple announced their intentions to separate in 1992.
The separation of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1992 was a huge scandal. They had many disagreements, and Sarah even went to appear in tabloids with her financial advisor, John Bryan, having an intimate association.
This effectively ended any hopes of a reconciliation between Prince Andrew and Sarah.
The couple determined they should divorce in 1996 and agreed to share custody of their two daughters, who would remain living at Sunninghill Park.
